George Paton choosing the Broncos over Detroit hints at some faith in stability above him in Denver, as well.
Court date looms, but that's a good sign.
— Joe Rowles (@JoRo_NFL) January 13, 2021what a great hire by the #Broncos - he was a top-tier candidate with a sterling reputation in the scouting community. Paton is serious, dedicated, has an eye for talent and understands how to maximize relationships. Loyal and smart too. @1043TheFanhttps://t.co/49bYzQ1es7
— Cecil Lammey (@CecilLammey) January 13, 2021George Paton and the Vikings have had plenty of success in the draft over the last decade.
No team has selected more future Pro Bowlers (13) than the Vikings during the last 10 NFL Drafts.
— Aric DiLalla (@AricDiLalla) January 13, 2021A six-year deal ensures a lot of security for George Paton (pronounced: Peyton) regardless of what happens with ownership.
John Elway's GM legacy began with Peyton and ends with Paton.
— RK (@RyanKoenigsberg) January 13, 2021Looks like Elway signed his second Peyton! https://t.co/ztc6EzkvNg
— ThatsGoodSports (@BrandonPerna) January 13, 2021So, I guess the #Broncos GM position was appealing after all?
— Ryan Edwards (@redwardsradio) January 13, 2021Can't wait for new Broncos GM George Paton to sign and trade Yannick Ngakoue in the same season! One of his most savvy moves with the Vikings
Congrats to the Broncos! They got their guy! THE guy. I’m excited. I’m sure more changes are on the way. So so day for Fangio. Great day for Schurmur. Bad day for Lock. BUT win the competition!!!!
— Darren McKee (@dmac1043) January 13, 2021If there’s anyone who can transform the #Broncos in one offseason, it’s Paton.
Denver will be a playoff team in 2021. Mark it down now.
— Zack Kelberman (@KelbermanNFL) January 13, 2021Of the 5 candidates Paton had the most experience. He’s withdrawn from multiple jobs in the past & I thought he may be too picky for this job. Having 6 years of security is a needle mover. Fresh & experienced eyes are now on the Broncos. Big day for the organization. Here we go.. https://t.co/2DZrkcd5rC
Damn. Six years!!!
That ensures a ton of security in case the team changes hands. https://t.co/Ax7H6FfgvF
— Vic Lombardiᴰʳ (@VicLombardi) January 13, 2021George Paton has been one of the most sought-after GM candidates for years, but he was choosy. Pulled out of the #Jets and #Browns searches the past two years. The time was finally right and Denver made a strong offer to land him. https://t.co/zcBjAtImSX
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 13, 2021League source on new #Broncos GM George Paton:
'Literally one of the absolute best in the business. They could not have done better. He should have been a GM years ago. Phenomenal hire.'
— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) January 13, 2021#Broncos hire of #Vikings’ George Paton for GM is a win for that org. Paton was probably the most patient GM candidate since Chris Ballard went through years of interviews. Had it not been for the Shanahan/Lynch alignment #49ers wanted in 2017, Paton is running Frisco right now.
— Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) January 13, 2021Just got a text from a personnel exec in the league..called Broncos new GM George Paton 'a great evaluator ... big-time hire.'
— Jeff Legwold (@Jeff_Legwold) January 13, 2021Denver Broncos fans don’t realize it, but I think they just got an extremely important piece for their future.
George Paton is an absolute stud. @Broncoshttps://t.co/KvnoHV5CpT
— Sage Rosenfels (@SageRosenfels18) January 13, 2021Up next for the Broncos is finding a replacement for Matt Russell, who served as Denver’s director of player personnel. Russell retired after John Elway stepped down from his GM duties last week.
In their first season of the post-Peyton era, the Denver Broncos still posted a winning record but missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
Heading into the 2017 NFL draft, Denver’s biggest need was clear: an upgrade at left tackle. It was one of the first round’s least surprising picks when the Broncos spent the No. 20 overall pick on Utah’s Garett Bolles, making him the first tackle off the board.
Whoever wins the quarterback battle, he’ll have more weapons at his disposal, as the Broncos spent half of their eight selections in this year’s draft on offensive skill players. Depth along the defensive line and in the secondary was also addressed on Day 2, while a polarizing but talented passer became this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant.”
Time will tell the final story, but at this point, what grade would you give the Broncos’ 2017 NFL draft class?
